Welcome to Motu School. My name is Teresa Shepherd and I am the principal.
Motu is a unique rural school in a hill country setting. With low class numbers we are a whānau and hold tuakana-teina relationships as integral to our learning programmes. We have a wonderful and supportive community around us and we lie in a very special location next to the Mōtū River.
All our staff at Mōtū are fully committed to providing the very best for our students. Currently our classes range from New Entrant to Year 8 children. Our large, roomy, flexible class learning space is very well equipped with up-to-date technology and resources for the benefit of children and their learning. We are also very fortunate to have a fabulous library.
Although we are one of the oldest schools in Tairāwhiti (established in 1895), we are a kura that ensures that innovative and creative teaching methods are used to establish a forward thinking and a positive learning environment. We offer a rich and holistic curriculum to develop all areas of learning and interest, utilising the incrediable outdoor environment to enhance learning opportunities.
Children are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular programmes which are available to them. These include and are not limited to swimming lessons onsite, at Matawai and Enterprise Pools, gymnastics, trampolining, lessons through REAP (Rural Schools programme), IT programmes, in-school music lessons and a variety of weekend sports including horse sports, cricket, rugby, netball and hunting. Mōtū children traditionally do very well in their sporting endeavours. The school ensures that as many different sporting codes are represented as possible.
Our learning programmes reflect the new curriculum by implementing structured approaches to literacy and numeracy. We also make connections from structured tools and approaches to local contexts ensuring the learning is relevant and authentic.
We know we have something really special to offer your children and your whānau. If you would like to have a visit and a look around, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office to make a time.
Ngā mihi,
Teresa Shepherd
